Meet our teachers
Prof. ThDr. Albín Masarik, PhD.
Albín Masarik completed his studies at the Evangelical Theological Faculty. He spent 10 years in church practice as a preacher and a member of the Council of the Baptist Brethren Union. He has been at the department for 27 years. In 2023, he achieved the title of professor. Its emphasis is practical theology, pastoral theology (focus on helping church workers) and homiletics (focus on funeral sermons). It helps students understand the meaning of the gospel for a person's daily life and pass that understanding on. He has completed research stays at well-known universities around the world, and has active international professional relations within Central Europe. He likes to joke, he likes to teach. He is an active believer. He has a wife and two sons.
Prof. PaedDr. Dana Hanesová, PhD.
D. Hanesová completed her studies at Comenius University and Matej Bel University. She is a professor of pedagogy, guarantor of the pedagogical part of teacher study programs. He guides theology students in English classes, and also supervises the improvement of the level of theological English. Its long-term emphasis with regard to the Department of Theology and Catechetics was the catechesis of youth children, both in the church and in the school environment. We are glad that students understand the importance of youth work in this way and can prepare for it well. It is this work that has become a lifelong profession for many graduates, also thanks to its inspiration.
Professor Hanesová develops the following areas: social pedagogy, service learning, catechetics and pedagogy in general. He has extensive experience in international research, international academic environment, rich publication outputs and responses to them. She is an active volunteer in various church groups. She has a husband, a daughter and a son.
Prof. ThDr. Pavel Hanes, PhD.
Pavel Hanes completed his studies at the Evangelical Theological Faculty. He spent nearly 11 years in church practice as a preacher and member of the Council of the Baptist Brethren. He has been at the department for 30 years. In 2019, he was appointed professor of theology by the President of the Slovak Republic. His emphasis is apologetics, systematic theology, theological philosophy (questions of Marxism and personal crisis from the point of view of theology) and the Old Testament (interpretation of the Old Testament). It provides students with the opportunity to understand and interpret the Old Testament in the context of their time. He has completed study stays abroad and has active international professional relations within Central Europe. He is also known for his emphasis on expository preaching, has many regular listeners across all denominations, and likes to open difficult philosophical topics with students. He is an active Christian. He has a wife, a daughter and a son.
Doc. Peter Málik, MPhil, PhD.
Peter Málik graduated from the University of Cambridge. He spent 3 years in church practice. He has been at the department since 2020. He devotes himself to the research of early Christian manuscripts, especially those containing the text of the New Testament. He is involved in several international research projects. He teaches mainly New Testament subjects, with an emphasis on working with the Greek text. It helps prepare students for a professional interpretation of the New Testament that will stand up to discussion of the difficult issues of the time. Those who are really interested will learn to read the New Testament in the original language. He is an active member of the Evangelical Church. He has a wife and four children.
Doc. PaedDr. Viktória Šoltésová, PhD.
Viktória Šoltésová has several years of experience in church service. She completed her studies at the Faculty of Education of UMB. She received the title of associate professor in 2021. It focuses on practical theology, especially catechetics, diakonia and missiology (specifically on mission in Roma communities in Slovakia). It helps graduates of the department to put the Gospel in the context of their time and to understand the various possibilities of communicating the Gospel. Her research is also going in this direction, in addition to professional studies, her work on the Roma translation of the New Testament or the revision of the Slovak version of the "Living Bible translation" are also interesting. She is active in church ministry, she likes to encourage students to see and use their potential in spiritual ministry. She has a husband, two sons and a granddaughter.
Todd Patterson, M.Div., PhD.
Todd Patterson graduated from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has been working as a missionary in Slovakia since 1992 and at the department since 2003. His emphases are the story as an organizing principle for biblical theology and the relationship between historiography and exegesis. It helps students maintain an emphasis on the Old Testament and the Bible as such in their theological formation, and also helps them cope with questions of biblical theology. It uses up-to-date effective methods for teaching biblical languages, encouraging students to use them. He is also part of research projects at the international level and brings experience from the international academic environment. She volunteers in the Evangelical Church. He has a wife and two children.
Mgr. Miloš Masarik, PhD.
Miloš Masarik completed his studies at PDF UMB in B. Bystrica and HTF of Charles University in Prague. He has been working as a preacher for 15 years. Its focus is on the introduction to the New Testament and its historical background. It helps students understand the context of the New Testament era so that they can safely translate its message into the present. He enjoys community activities associated with the department. He has experience with international theological projects and study stays abroad. He has a wife and two children.
Mgr. Benjamin Uhrin, Th.D.
Benjamin Uhrin completed his studies at PDF UMB in B. Bystrica and HTF of Charles University in Prague. Its emphasis is New Testament biblical and public theology. It helps students communicate the message of the Gospel in a challenging public debate. He has extensive experience in practice, he was a preacher for 16 years, the chairman of the board of directors of TC Kompas in Žilina for about 10 years, and a member of the board of directors of the International Baptist Seminary in Prague for several years. He led the BJB Youth Department, founded and led a team to support the establishment of new BJB congregations, founded and leads the Slovak Evangelical Institute (SEVIN). Currently, he also serves as the chairman of the Council of the Baptist Brethren Union and the chairman of the Association of Evangelical Churches. He has a wife and five children.
Juraj Institoris, MTh., PhD.
Juraj Institoris completed his studies at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Bc.), PDF UMB (Bc.), University of Chester (MTh.) and University of Highlands and Islands (PhD.). It is dedicated to the exegesis of the New Testament - it helps students grasp the basic tools through which they discover the original meaning of the text. He worked as a professional editor on the edition of the Slovak Study Bible. Subsequently, he worked for 5 years in a local church in Glasgow, Scotland, as a missionary worker among the Roma. He has been serving as a preacher since 2022 in the Congregation of the Church of the Brethren in Banská Bystrica. He has a wife and three children.
